NAPPANEE - Mardell J. Berger, age 88, of 6731 W 1350 N, Nappanee, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, at her residence at 10:30 a.m. She was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Bremen, to Arthur and Helen (Wells) Heckaman. She was a lifetime area resident. She worked at Ball Band in Mishawaka, and was a sewer for Phoenix, Franklin Coach, and Leisure Time in Nappanee, and had worked as a cafeteria worker at Central School. She was a member of the Nappanee United Methodist Church, a former member of the Kosciusko County Extension Cable Stitch Club. She was a farmer's wife, a great cook, and enjoyed her flowers. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling. Mardell loved children and working with children very much. She married Dale Berger on March 19, 1950, in Nappanee, and he preceded in death on Oct. 20, 1993. Surviving Mardell are daughter, Vicki (Gene) Royer of Lovell, Maine; sons, Dennis Berger of Nappanee, Fredric Berger of Sarasota, FL; 8 grandchildren, Dale (Karina) Royer, Mark (Faith) Royer, Anna Royer, Lori (Nick) Greiwe, Kimberly (fianc‚ Steve Reynolds) Berger, Daryl (Katy) Berger, Jennifer (fianc‚ Jeff Roberts) Berger, and Thomas (Rocio) Berger; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Loraine (Devon) Marburg-er of Mishawaka, Alberta (James, preceded in death) Christopel of Dillsburg, PA, and Janet (Melvin) Lemler of Bremen. She was preceded in death by sister, Shirley Andrews, and brothers, Frederick and Arthur Heckaman. Visitation will be on Friday, August 7, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home in Nappanee, and for one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. funeral service on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, also at the funeral home. Rev. Jim Davidson will officiate, and burial will follow at Bremen Cemetery.
