1. OBITUARY: The Bremen Enquirer, 23 Nov 1939, Page 1. http://www.bremen.lib.in.us/historical/bpl_OBITdetail.asp?item=106397. Downloaded 26 Jan 2007. CARL BALSLEY KILLED BY SHOT WHILE HUNTING -- ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF COMPANION'S GUN CAUSES DEATH OF BREMEN YOUTH WHILE HUNTING SATURDAY. -- The accidental discharge of a shotgun in the hands of one of hte members of a youthful hunting party as the group crossed a fence caused the death of Carl Balsley, eighteen years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Balsley, Saturday morning. He died almost instantly.
Carl and his brother Marvin had gone on a rabbit hunt with three neighbor boys -- Doyle Balsley, Eugene Yost and Dale Hand. On the Clyde Ellis farm, three miles west of Bremen, the boys were climbing a wire fence when the tragic accident occurred. Dale Hand, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hand, was pressing against the wire of the fence with the barrel of his gun. In some manner the gun was discharged. The charge entered Carl's back on the left side, puncturing his left lung.
Carl was born on the Balsley farm west of Bremen, May 19, 1921. He had lived all his life in this community and was graduated from the Bremen high school last May. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Balsley; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Grebe, Jr., and Eloise Balsley; one brother, Marvin; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Balsley and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Berger.
Funeral services were held in Salem Evangelical church Monday afternoon, in charge of the pastor, Rev. M. O. Herman. Burial was in the Bremen cemetery.
