Ashley, ND-Funeral service for Gerhard Herbert Kempf, 93, of Ashley will be 10:30 am, Monday, July 27, 2015 at Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. Linda J. Schauer will officiate.
Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3-5 pm at the funeral home.
He died Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Ashley Nursing Home.
Gerhard Herbert Kempf was born February 18, 1922 in Jewell District in McIntosh County, approximately ten miles southeast of Ashley, ND to John and Pauline (Dewald) Kempf. He had one older brother, Ervin and a younger sister, Priscilla “Pat”. He attended country school and worked on the family farm.
Gerhard was united in marriage to Olga Ann Albrecht on April 18, 1943 in Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Long Lake, SD. They moved to the family farm and raised grain and cattle. Gerhard also did well drilling with his brother-in-law, Leonard Albrecht from 1950 until 1962. In 1970, he began Kempf Trucking, hauling grain and cattle to many states. In 1974 Gerhard and Olga built a house east of Ashley where he continued to run his trucking business until 2002. He also continued going out to the farm to help his son, Robert with the farming. They sold their home in 2007 and moved into the Heritage Apartments in Ashley.
Gerhard enjoyed playing cards, watching the Twins and Vikings games, gardening and playing with his great-grandchildren. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Farmers Union and National Farmers Organization.
Gerhard is survived by his wife of 72 years, Olga; daughter, Dianna (John) Jorgenson of Whitewood, SD; three sons, LeRoy Kempf of Cypress, CA, Robert (Luana) Kempf of Ashley and Karlon (Sonya) Kempf of Aberdeen; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Gerhard in death were his parents, brother, Ervin and sister, Pat Teal.
Honorary Casketbearers will be Gerhard’s great-grandchildren, Kelli, Julie and Nikolaus Fuchs, Evan Fuchs, Garritt (Pele) Kempf, Raegan, Zoe and Ella Kempf, Caelan and Kiera Lindsay, Tanner and Alexis Kempf, Claire and Owen Kempf, Christopher and Nicolas LaVerne and Brantly Jorgenson.
Casketbearers will be Gerhard’s grandchildren, Neil and LeAnn Fuchs, Bryon and Randi Fuchs, Lezley Kempf, Shawn and Nicole Kempf, Kelly Lindsay, John and Michelle Kempf, Christopher and Mary Kempf, Christina LaVerne and Chad and Natasha Jorgenson.
The family prefers memorials to Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley or Ashley Medical Center.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
