Arthur P. Schumacher, son of Jacob and Kathrina (Koerner) Schumacher was born June 21, 1915 southwest of Long Lake. This is where he grew up and attended country school. He was united in marriage to Esther Alvina Christina Maier on June 8, 1941 at Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm six miles southwest of Long Lake. They farmed there raising small grains and livestock. In 1969, they moved into Long Lake. He milked cows for Charles and Leila Maule for many years. In addition, he and Esther painted many barns, houses and other out buildings. In January of 1999, they moved to Leola and then to the Golden Living Center in Ipswich in 2000.
Art loved music. He sang in the church choir and played in the Long Lake Community Band for many years. Through the years, music became increasingly important to him. He enjoyed singing with and for the residents at Golden Living Center. In addition to his love of music, he enjoyed making things out of odds and ends. To his delight, his grandchildren enjoyed riding the double bike and swinging in the hammock he’d crafted.
Survivors include one son, Curtis (Diane) Schumacher of Leola; two daughters, Carolyn (Larry) Pater of Champaign, Illinois and Joyce (Merwyn) Larson of Golden Valley, MN; one sister, Verna Schock of Eureka; five grandchildren, Tina (Joel) Guthmiller, Darren (Angela) Schumacher, Derek Pater, Aaron (Mandy) Larson and Joshua (Abby) Larson and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Esther, both parents, four sisters (Ida, Sophie, Mathilda, and Hildegard) and four brothers (August, Adolph, Edmund and Henry).
