Kyle Bender, age 26, of Yankton, missing since December 11, 2010 was recovered in the Missouri River, Sunday, April 24, 2011.
Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 30, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. Steve Weispfennig officiating. A balloon release will take place at Riverside Park immediately following the services.
Visitations will begin at 6:00 PM, Friday evening with a memory sharing service at 7:00 PM at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. A video tribute will be played at the church beginning at 1:30 PM before services on Saturday.
Kyle was born June 7, 1984 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. He attended school in Yankton, Vermillion, and Sioux Falls, SD. He finished his High School requirements in 2002 and graduated in 2003. He attended college for one semester at Southeast Tech in Sioux Falls.
Kyle did all types of construction work but specialized in large projects like bridges and shopping malls. He helped build the Discovery Bridge in Yankton and several others. He worked in Yankton, the Black Hills, Minneapolis, Omaha, and Sioux Falls. His loved his work.
Kyle’s interests included sky diving, snowboarding, scuba diving, and anything extreme. He also loved reading Scripture, attending church, and helping friends with remodeling projects. His number one passion was cage fighting and he developed strong bonds in the UFC organization. He worked out five nights a week and took classes in strength training and cage fighting. He was adamant about his diet and exercise program.
Kyle was also very devoted to his family and he kept a large network of very close friends in every city he spent time in. Most of his friends in Yankton were close to him his entire life. He was as big and strong as a bear but as lovable as a teddy bear.
Grateful for having shared Kyle’s life are his mother, Constance Schenkel (Mark Spencer), Yankton, his grandfather, Adam Bender, Sr., Yankton, his uncles, Adam Bender, Jr. (Lisa Kay), Huntington Beach, CA, and Brad (Rhonda) Bender, Yankton, his aunts, Tamara Woods (Randy Leach), Red Wing, MN, Jodie Bender, St. Paul, MN, and Hope (Jim) Lanz, Durand, WI, and numerous cousins.
Kyle is now in heaven with his grandmother, RoseMary Bender.
