Edward M. Fallon, 87, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was born in Huntington, Long Island, New York.
In 1941, he entered the floor covering business and later served three years with the Army Air Corps, stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka.
He and his wife, Aggie, were married in Topeka in 1945, she preceded him in death.
When his term of service ended, they returned to Sayville, New York, where they raised their family until they returned to Topeka in 1966. Ed became a business representative for Floor Layers Local #1179 in May 1969. He was president of the Topeka Federation of Labor for 17 years and served on the executive board of the Kansas AFL-CIO for 12 years.
He was a member on the State Advisory Council on Unemployment Insurance for 13 years and the State Employment and Training Council for 2 years.
Ed was on the Board of Directors for the Metropolitan Topeka Transit Authority for 16 years of which 13 years he served as chairman. He served on the 1974 Bicentennial Commission of Kansas; the United Way board of directors 6 years; the Kansas Industrial Round Table; the Task Force for Change of Government in Topeka and Board of Trustees for Memorial Hospital.
Ed co-chaired the Association for Action, which sought and won support for the terminal at Forbes Field, development of the Kansas Expocentre and Heartland Park. He was vice-president of the National Floor Coverers Council and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, both in 1984. Ed was a founding member of the St. Patricks Day Parade Committee. On July 4, 1987 he accepted the KSNT Citizen of the Year Award.
Survivors include daughters, Alice Mumford (Gary), Overland Park, KS, Rose Fallon, Naples, FL, and Loretta Shelley, Topeka, KS; grandchildren, David Studer, Tara Regan, John Mumford, Haley Shelley; great grandchildren, Casey Filter, Jakob Studer, Brennan Regan; great great grandson, Gage Filter; a brother, Joseph Fallon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Studer; a sister, Mary Houston; brothers, James and Owen.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home; 2801 SW Urish Rd, Topeka KS 66614, where a rosary will be prayed following the visitation at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
