Aberdeen - Services for Merton Bender, 90, Aberdeen are 10 a.m. Friday, June 30, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Merton died Monday, June 26, 2006, at ManorCare Health Services.
George Merton Bender was born on Aug. 16, 1915, to George and Rose (Jensen) Bender on a farm near Java, S.D. He attended country school through the elementary grades. He attended the Menno, S.D., high school his freshman year and the remaining years at the Java high school. He completed two years of college at Northern State Teachers College. He taught in rural schools for eight years; after which he went to work for the Unemployment Compensation Commission of South Dakota in Aberdeen.
In December 1941, Merton enlisted into the Army Air Corps at Fort Snelling, Minn. He attended radio school at Scott Field, Ill., and was assigned to the Army Airways Communications System. He served three months at the Atlanta Army Air Base where he attained the rank of sergeant. Merton was sent over seas to the CBI Theater where he served on detached service at Chakulia, India, and Gaya, India. During this time he attained the rank of master sergeant. At the close of the war in Europe, he was sent to San Antonio, Texas, to attend Officers Candidate School, from whence he graduated as a second lieutenant.
On Oct. 17, 1946, Merton and Frieda Dockter of McLaughlin, S.D., were united in marriage. The spring of 1947, Merton received an honorable discharge from the Army; was placed on inactive reserve; and returned to his position with the Unemployment Compensation Commission. In 1950 he was appointed postmaster at Houghton, S.D., and also owned and operated a grocery store in Houghton.
In 1951 Merton married Alice (DeVelde) Binder. Merton and Alice jointly operated the Houghton Store and the Houghton Post Office.
In 1981, Alice was tragically killed in a car accident. On May 27, 1984, Merton and Frieda (Dockter) Bosch were married. Merton retired from the post office on June 1, 1984, and they made their home in Aberdeen.
Grateful for having shared Merton's life are his wife, Frieda, Aberdeen; five sons, Randy (Audrey) Bender, Lafayette, Colo., Keith Bender, Yankton, S.D., Gerald (Sandy) Bender, Jerusalem, Israel, David (Brenda) Bender, Boulder, Colo., and Francis Bosch, Aberdeen; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Frances McCreary, Seattle, Wash.
Merton was preceded in death by his parents, second wife, Alice and brother, George Merton.
