Victoria "Vicky" Colleen Sherwood was foremost a dedicated mom with a love for growing roses and gardening, animals and crocheting, but she was also a reliable volunteer. For eight years she worked as a volunteer at the Indian Health Service Clinic in McLaughlin, working in the medical records department. It earned her a Volunteer of the Year award.
For a time, she did some substitute teaching in McLaughlin, and worked as a business manager at the McLaughlin and Wakpala schools.
Then, in December of 2003, Vicky learned she had cancer. She battled it, going through radiation and chemotherapy treatments, but it couldn't be stopped. Vicky died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital at the age of 62.
She was born July 21, 1942, in Mobridge to Wendlin and Leuna (Mettler) Keller. She grew up in McLaughlin and graduated from the McLaughlin High School in 1960. She attended St. Martin's Academy in Sturgis and then earned an AA degree in business through an affiliate of Bismarck Junior College.
For a time, she worked as a waitress in a Fort Yates, N.D., café. She and William "Bill" Sherwood Jr. had grown up together as neighbors and they became still closer when they married on June 4, 1960, in McLaughlin. Bill was employed with the BIA police and his work took them to live in Dickinson, N.D., McLaughlin, California, Wakpala, Fort Yates, Wagner and Pierre until they settled to make their home on Sherwood Hill near McLaughlin.
Vicky had many hobbies, enjoyed many crafts, playing Bingo, visiting the casino, loving all her children and their offspring, and fishing.
"She could sit all day, pole in hand," said her husband Bill. "If she caught something, fine. If not, there would be another day." Vicky also did a lot of sewing. "With six kids, there was also a lot of patching to do," Bill added.
When their children were growing up, their home was a busy place. Several other children called her "mom" and she was a sounding board for all their young problems.
She is survived by her husband William of rural McLaughlin; three sons, Steven Sherwood and wife Billie Jo of Highmore, Dennis Sherwood of McLaughin, amd William Sherwood III and wife Robin of Gladstone, N.D.; three daughters, Michealle and Kevin Jantzen of Benton, Kan., Denise and Leonard Feist of Newcastle, Wyo., and Suzanne Sherwood and Butch Webb of Isabel; and her mother, Leuna Keller of McLaughlin.
Also surviving are grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Dusty Vilhauer, Rian Vilhauer and Lexes Vilhauer, all of Madrid, Iowa; Brandy and Brady Faehnrich, Dalton Faehnrich and Jack Faehnrich, all of Mobridge; Chance Heid, Ty Heid, Melissa Heid, Zachary Stout, Baby Stout, Logan Heid and Luke Heid of Benton; Amanda Feist and Jeremy Feist, both of Newcastle, Kailee Webb and Kenna Webb, both of Isabel; Zane Sherwood and Wendy Sherwood of Highmore; brothers, Paul and Marjorie Keller, and Tim and Colleen Keller, all of McLaughlin, and Andrew Keller of Louisiana.
Her father, Wendlin Keller, and her grandparents preceded her in death.
Mass of Christian Burial for Vicky was celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 4, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in McLaughin. Father Tony Grossenburg and Fr. Kerry Prendiville were concelebrants. Readers were Brandy Faehnrich and Dusty Vilhauer. Servers were Amanda Feist, Josh Keller and Luke Keller. Jeremy Feist and Kailee Webb were gift bearers.
Janice Kraft was organist and accompanied the congregation for the hymns, "How Great Thou Art," "Be Not Afraid," "Amazing Grace" and "Here I Am, Lord." Ushers were Justin Baker and Jeremy Lester.

Honorary bearers were Dr. Jacobsen, Greg and Candy Sherwood, Melinda Sherwood, Paul and Marjorie Keller, Tim and Colleen Keller, Andrew Keller and all Vicky's other friends and family.
Burial was in the McLaughlin City Cemetery under the direction of Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge.
A Scriptural wake service was held Monday evening at the church.
