THE FIRST TRAIL-BLAZERS
It was in the fall of the year 1888 when the freedom of the buffalo, the coyote and the antelope of this part of Emmons County, now known as Strasburg, was disturbed for the first time by a group of five daring dashing young single men.
As we have said previously, the social and economical instability of Russia at that time urged these people whose forefathers had migrated to southern Russia at the invitation of the Russian rulers nearly a century before to seek greener pastures elsewhere. They had no doubt heard of the vast unsettled plains of the Dakotas and that the U. S. Government offered land grants to immigrants to this middlewest, similarly as did the Russian rulers to their forefathers. This then was the land of promise for these industrious people. For these reasons the colony of Strasburg in Russia wanted a few to come to this territory to scout around and ascertain the possibility of settling down here. This desire of the people of the colony of Strasburg was fulfilled by the above mentioned five single young men. They were:
JOSEPH BAUMGARTNER, JOSEPH BAUMGARTNER, SEBASTIAN BAUMAN, JACOB FEIST, and
MR. JOSEPH KRAFT. homesteader here until he moved to Harvey in 1902, married Bosina Fischer, had eight children: Joseph-dead, Martin, Marianna, Wilhelm, Rochus-dead, Rosa, Peter and Anton. Mr. Kraft is no longer living according to reports.
It is interesting to note that the wives of the above mentioned trail-blazing pioneers are still living and so are most of their children.
These then are the five men that ventured into these uninhabited plains in the fall of 1888. They did not settle down here that very fall but went to Eureka, S. D. to spend the winter. During these long winter months they kept their friends and relatives in Russia informed as to the conditions here and urged them to come to this promising land.
