BUCYRUS: Margaret "Peg" Wenner, 90, of Bucyrus, passed away suddenly on March 16, 2014, at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.
Peg was born on April 2, 1923, to Audrey Bevelhymer Noble and Harry Noble, long-term residents of Westerville, Ohio. Her father's family emigrated from England in the 1600's. After graduating from Westerville High School in 1940, she entered The Ohio State University School of Nursing, where she was a member of the Torch Club, a nursing honorary. While at OSU she met medical student Donald Wenner, and they married in September 16, 1944.
Only weeks after their marriage and honeymoon at Lake Hope, they left for California where Don interned at the Los Angeles County General Hospital and Peg supported him by nursing at the Southern Pacific Railroad Hospital in Los Angeles. After Don finished his internship he joined the Navy and served in the Long Beach Naval Hospital. Shortly thereafter Peg gave birth to her first child, Steven, on January 8, 1946, and gained her initial experience in managing a house and family.
Returning to Ohio, the couple eventually settled in Bucyrus where Don set up his medical practice and Peg managed the household, giving birth to her second child, Becky, on August 3, 1949. Their quiet life in Bucyrus was interrupted by the Korean War, when in October, 1952, they returned to California where Don served as medical officer on a Navy ship. Peg had to manage mostly on her own, living in San Diego and later in Haywood. While in California Peg took up golf, for which she had a natural talent; she was eventually crowned Ladies Golf Champion at the Bucyrus Country Club in 1989.
After returning to Ohio, Peg gave birth to Susan on August 14, 1954, and Craig on December 21, 1956. While juggling house and children, Peg found time to serve her community; she served for two terms as an elected member of the Bucyrus City Council, she taught swimming and life-saving for both the Red Cross and YMCA, and she was a Hospital Twig member.
Peg was a very active person who enjoyed both golf and bicycling. In 1976 she and Don traversed the Bike Centennial Trail from the coast of Oregon to the eastern side of the continental divide in Colorado. She often joined Don and their children on bicycling outings in Ohio and other states. She was also a good sport and participated in family fishing vacations when the kids were young, even though that was probably not her favorite type of vacation!
Over the years Don and Peg formed strong friendships with others in their community, and Peg enjoyed entertaining - for many years they participated in two bridge clubs. And let's not forget the line dancing!
A severe blow struck Peg and her family in 2006 with the tragic drowning deaths of Craig and his wife, Pat. Peg's inner strength helped the family recover its footing and find its way through that difficult period.
As Don eased into retirement, Peg and he had time to enjoy traveling and had many adventures exploring the far corners of our world. She enjoyed gardening and landscaping, quilting, cooking, decorating her home and especially her family gatherings.
Peg was an energetic, vibrant person who expressed her love and supported her family, friends and community in many ways. She will be sorely missed.
Peg is survived by her husband of 69 years Dr. Donald R. Wenner; her oldest son, Steven R. Wenner and his wife, Liliane; her oldest daughter, Rebecca J. Harris and her younger daughter, Susan K. Calvert and her husband, Bob Calvert. Peg also has four grandchildren, Craig, Carolyn, Sara and Yvette and two great grandsons, Eli and Kai.
Those wishing to make a donation in Peg's memory can contribute to Peg's favorite charity, the Humane Society Serving Crawford County, or to the American Cancer Society or St. Paul's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
A memorial service will be held in Peg's honor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 130 South Walnut St. in Bucyrus, at 11:30 AM on Friday 21, 2014. The family will greet friends between 10:30 and 11:30 in the church. A luncheon will be provided after the service.
