Bender, 69, of Bakersfield passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2007, in Bakersfield. She was born June 26, 1937, to Vera and Harold Dormaier in Menno, South Dakota. Shirley was a resident of Bakersfield since late 1937 having been brought here by her parents shortly after her birth. She was a graduate of Bakersfield High in 1955. Shirley recently retired from Kern County after 37 years of employment, most of which were at the Meadows Field Airport. She is survived by her daughter, Sharri Ehlert and her family of Clovis, CA; and her Aunt Clara Jackson of Bakersfield. She is also survived by her five grandchildren that were very dear to her heart; Anne, Jakob, and Emma Lopez of Ventura, CA; Benjamin and Megan Ehlert of Clovis, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alten; her son, Michael; and her daughter, Joy Lopez. Shirley was a long-time member of Lutheran Church of Prayer, Bakersfield. At Lutheran Church of Prayer, she had been active in the Hand-Bell Choir and various Church Leadership positions. Graveside burial services will be held on Friday, June 1st, 10:00 a.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bakersfield followed by a Memorial Service at Lutheran Church of Prayer, 11:00 a.m. At Shirley's request, there will be no scheduled visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's memory to Lutheran Church of Prayer, 8001 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93306. Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 5/30/2007.
