Birth: Jun. 22, 1929 Eureka McPherson County South Dakota, USA Death: May 8, 2006 California, USA Ruben Christian Scherle, who owned and operated Scherle Sales in Mobridge for a number of years in the 1960s and 1970s, was one of the city's larger employers. His construction company was the contractor for the building of the Klein Museum among other buildings in the city and area. He also had offices in Aberdeen and Bismarck, where he and his family lived for a time after leaving Mobridge. Most of his six children attended Mobridge schools. While in Mobridge, Scherle was named Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer and in August 1971 the Citizens Bank of Mobridge elected him to serve on its Board of Directors. Ruben died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, in Santa Maria, Calif., where he had been making his home, at the age of 76. He was born June 22, 1929, in Eureka to Katherine Bossert and Fred Scherle of Artas. On July 11, 1948, he married Erna Klipfel. They farmed his homestead near Eureka until 1966 at which time he moved to focus on Scherle Sales Construction and he was in business in Mobridge in 1967. After leaving Bismarck, they moved to Costa Mesa in 1984, then to Palm Springs, Calif. In 1994 they moved to Santa Maria to be near family. "Dad had many friends and considered Mobridge his home," his daughter Sandy said. He was an active member of Lutheran Church of Our Savior and loved to visit with his friends at Family Fitness in Santa Maria. Survivors are his wife Erna Scherle of 1926 Vista del Oro, Santa Maria, Calif. 93458; children, Sandy (Parnell) Fuhrer, Mary (Roger) Nelson and Paul (DeeDee) Scherle of the Santa Maria area, Ruben (Kalan) Scherle Jr. of Seattle, Wash., Cathy (Michael) Yerger of Beverly, N.J., and Ann (Jim) Perry of Auburn, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sister Emma Hieb of Carlsbad, Calif.; and brother, the Rev. Fred (Edna) Scherle of Lytton, Calif.
