Henry Louis "Hank" Kerschbaum Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, in his beloved retirement town of Evergreen.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, to Henry Louis and Magdalena (Ochsner) Kerschbaum, he lived his young life, college and military days in Ohio. He attended the University of Toledo on the GI Bill and graduated in 1953 after serving active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1950 to 1951. Henry also served as a sergeant in the Marines from 1946 to 1948. On Dec. 21, 1951, Henry married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Jeanne (Klinksick).
Upon graduation from the University of Toledo with a degree in mechanical engineering, he began a 30-year career with Owens-Illinois, which moved his family from Ohio to Venezuela to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Indiana. He retired to Evergreen, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and hiking with his dogs, children and grandchildren in the beautiful outdoors.
Henry was a generous and compassionate man who enjoyed helping others through his church as a member of the Piped Pipers. He helped with numerous projects throughout the community. He enjoyed every minute of snowplowing, fixing and wood chopping. His Fix-It Post was known as the neighborhood Home Depot. Henry saved many a piece of "garbage" from the landfill. He could fix anything! Once the work was finished, he could be found most afternoons entertaining visitors and/or family on his beautiful front porch.
Henry was extremely loving and devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara; and his four sons, Bill (Linda) of Madison, Wis., Steven (Maryjean) of Highlands Ranch, Todd (Mary) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Andrew (Melanie) of Kingwood, Texas. He was a loving grandfather to his five grandchildren, Amy, Barrett, Luke, Logan and Gage, and great-grandson Charlie. They loved riding the scooter or sledding around the property, as well as getting a hunting or fishing lesson from Grandpa.
Henry's celebration of life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Evergreen Lutheran Church, 5980 Highway 73.
His generous spirit would welcome donations to one of the following in lieu of flowers: Mt.
