Shoemaker February 18, 1938 - April 8, 2016 Obituary Theresa Shoemaker, aged 78, died peacefully on April 8, 2016 surrounded by her children after a brief struggle with leukemia. Theresa was born in the beautiful village of Bollenborn, Germany in the Rhineland-Pflaz, the daughter of Henrich and Katharina Ackermann. Starting at a young age as an exchange student in London, England, Theresa was determined to travel and see the world. In 1961, Theresa married Eugene Shoemaker and became a career military wife. The US Army took them many places over the years as they raised their three children, including Hawaii, where Theresa became a US citizen in 1967. After their retirement, the couple continued to enjoy traveling throughout the United States and the world. In addition to being an Army wife and raising a family, Theresa worked for the Killeen Independent School District for 22 years after the family relocated to Fort Hood, Texas. Theresa called Texas home for the last 39 years, first at Fort Hood, then Killeen, and finally in Austin, where she had resided for the last six years. Theresa was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Eugene Shoemaker. She is survived by sisters, Hildegard Sarter and Hedwig Kessler, both of Bad Bergzabern, Germany; daughter Rosemarie Connell (and husband Michael) of Arlington, MA; son Michael Shoemaker (and wife Karla Shoemaker) of Maumelle, AR; and son David (and wife Judy Shoemaker) of Austin, TX. She was the devoted and beloved grandmother to Emily, Jonathan, and Jessica Shoemaker and to Cameron Connell. She leaves behind her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Patricia Shoemaker of Newark, DE and her brother-in-law, Ronald Hummer of Mertztown, PA, all of whom she was so fond of. Theresa had seven nieces and six nephews. Theresa also leaves behind many cherished friends who loved her company, her cooking, and her great wit. She will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and friend. A Rosary at St.Theresa's Catholic Church in Austin will be held on Wednesday, April 13th at 6:30pm. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, April 14th from 5-7pm at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen. Funeral Services will be on Friday, April 15th at 10:30am at St. Paul Chong Hasang Catholic Church in Harker Heights, a parish where Theresa and Eugene expressed and renewed their strong shared faith in God for many years.
