Alvina Steinley was born May 14, 1904, to David, Sr. and Katherine (Klein) Steinley at Mountain Lake, Minn. In 1907, she moved to North Dakota with her parents and three brothers. Alvina often remarked that this was her only train ride. She lived on the homestead with her family until age 12, when they moved to a farmstead on Antelope Creek. Alvina attended country school and high school in Carson, but was called home to care for her mother who had become ill. She also worked for a short time in a store owned by Mrs. Kelly in Carson. Alvina met Art Nuss and they were married June 19, 1928, at Heil. They lived on several farms and also traveled to California to work during the difficult years of the drought during the 1930's. After returning to North Dakota, they bought a farm eight miles northwest of Carson, where they lived until moving into Carson in 1952.
In her active years, Alvina was active in her church and was always ready to help wherever she could. She was active for many years in the Lutheran Women's organization.
Alvina was an accomplished seamstress and prolific in crocheting afghans. She loved giving them to her children and grandchildren. Later at the nursing home, she became known for crocheting dishcloths. She enjoyed giving them to staff members at the home and to all who came to visit her. One never left her room after a visit without a dishcloth.
She is survived by her son, Bob and wife, Mary Jo, Bismarck; one daughter, Shirley and husband, Mike Lord, Bismarck; one daughter-in-law, Angie Nuss, Dickinson; her grandchildren, Dave Lord and wife, Kathy, Jamie Zastoupil and husband, Dean, Jerry Nuss and wife, Jodie, Jenn Nuss and husband, Todd Brobst and Jim Nuss; and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding Alvina in death were her husband, Art; her son, James; and six brothers, David Jr., Reinhardt, John, Emanuel, William "Bill" and Elmer.
