Raymond Lawrence Burkhart of Holyoke, formerly of Denver, died Jan. 4, 2014, in Holyoke. Raymond was born Feb. 7, 1929, in Salix, Iowa, the son of Disa and Anna Burkhart.
Ray grew up in Salix. He went to school in Salix through the eighth grade. After he graduated from the eighth grade, he helped his father on the family farm. In 1951, Ray joined the Army. He was stationed in Korea, where he fought in the Korean War. He was honored with the Bronze Star while serving his country. He received many more ribbons for his bravery to help save other Army men.
After returning from Korea, Raymond was united in marriage to Beverly Cutler of Sioux City, Iowa, on May 2, 1952. They were blessed with three children: Catherine, JoLynn and Raydean. Ray worked at Amours Co. while living in Sioux City. Ray packed his family and moved to Colorado. He worked for Red Owl and Associate Grocery and retired from Associated Grocery.
Ray was always in his garage, working on old cars and pickups. He loved a Sunday drive to the mountains and he enjoyed camping and fishing, but mostly Ray's love was his family. Ray and his son Dean would be playing a game of pool. They won many times.
Ray also loved his dogs. He always had one around to talk to and go for walks. If Ray's grandchildren were around, he was always seen doing things with them.
Ray was a member of the American Legion Post 22 for many years. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge for a number of years. He volunteered at Bingo for over 20 years.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his father, Disa; his mother, Anna; all of his brothers; and his only sister.
Raymond is survived by his children, Catherine and Ron Edge of Holyoke, JoLynn and John Richardson of Margate, Fla., and Raydean "Dean" and Kelly Burkhart of Northglenn; five grandchildren, Wendy of Gainesville, Ga., Dena of Lincoln, Neb., Krista of Lakeworth, Fla., Shaun of Ogallala, Neb., and Alyssa of Northglenn; 11 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.
Services were scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Olinger Highland Mortuary at 10201 N. Grant St. in Thornton.
