Her father described her as "an independent child". She attended her early years at the Belden school in rural Day County, and beginning her 7th year of school she attended in town (Andover). She graduated from Andover High School in 1943 at age 16. Mavis Ilene Dokter married Herbert John Ehresman on February 27, 1944, in Andover, Day Co., South Dakota. Herbert was in the US Navy, and they lived briefly in Brooklyn, NY, and then in San Diego, CA. In 1945 they settled in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They were blessed with three children: Deanna, Delwyn, and Daryl. Daryl passed away in 1971, a victim of leukemia. Mavis was employed as a secretary and payroll clerk for the Aberdeen School District, retiring after 19 years of service. Mavis was active in a broad variety of church and community groups. She enjoyed traveling and she excelled in a variety of handwork crafts. Her husband had preceded her in death in 1981.
