Obituary Bismarck Tribune (March 09, 2009)
Jacob "Jack" M. Hatzenbihler, 97, Bismarck, died March 7, 2009, at St. Vincent Care Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Chad Gion as celebrant. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Moose Ritual at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m. and parish vigil at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Jack was born July 3, 1911, in Yucca, the son of John and Barbara (Barnhardt) Hatzenbihler. He was raised and lived in Center when he married Magdlyn Lantz on Nov. 8, 1938. They lived on a farm near Center until 1974. They then moved to Mandan and lived together until Magdlyn was called home to God on July 4, 1991. In 1994, he moved to Liberty Heights in Mandan. He lived there until October 2003, when he moved to Bismarck and lived with his daughter, Jane, and his son-in-law, Wayne Benz.
Jack was a lifetime member of the Mandan Moose. He also had belonged to the Knights of Columbus of Mandan, St. Vincent Verein and Smear Club. He bowled as long as health permitted and, of course, was always ready to play pinochle. Jack and Magdlyn loved to go camping and fishing. He was always ready to plant the garden and flowers and couldn't wait to eat the vegetables or smell the flowers.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert (Olivia), Mandan, and Gerald (Lynette), Center; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane (Wayne) Benz, Bismarck; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters-in-law, John (Barbara), Wenatchee, Wash., Ralph (Louise), Mandan, M.J., Bismarck, and Adeline, Yakima, Wash.; three sisters, Rose Jahner, Bismarck, Beata Haag and Liz Haag, both from Center.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Madglyn; his parents; one sister and one brother-in-law, Mary (Martin) Emineth; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Matt, Frank (Darlene), Pete (Betty), Margaret and Cecelia; three brothers-in-law, Bill Jahner, John Haag and Jake Haag.
