Pious J. Pfleger was born Aug. 29, 1929, to Anton and Clementine (Erhardt) Pfleger. He was raised on the family farm near Center and educated at the nearby country school. After serving in the U.S. Navy for four years, he was honorably discharged in 1950. In 1953, he married Irene Haag. Together they built a life of farming, which began in Solen. In 1972, they moved to New Salem, where they farmed until their retirement in 1997, when they moved to Center. Pious, a loving caring man who treasured and always put his family first, worked hard to instill these virtues as well as the values of honesty and hard work into his children. His reward for these efforts was the pride he felt when seeing how his children and grandchildren live their lives. Spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren made him especially happy. Pious was mechanically inclined and could rebuild starters and engines. He and Irene graced many dance floors and especially loved a good wedding dance. Pious liked to fish and was always ready for a game of Pinochle.
Pious lived a very full life and will be missed by all who knew and loved him; his wife of 54 years, Irene, Center; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy (Dale) Ziegler, Mandan, Charlene Lang, Bismarck, Geralyn Roehrich, Mandan, and Stacy (Todd) Borneman, Center; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Kurt Pfleger, Bismarck, Conrad (Vicky) Pfleger, Mandan, and Loni Pfleger, Bismarck; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Monica Kautzman, Vaughn, Mont., and Rose Zeutchel, Spokane, Wash.; and one brother, Bill (Genevieve), Great Falls, Mont.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary; two brothers, Raymond and Peter; and two sisters, Diane and Emily.
