Irene Haag was born in Oliver County Feb. 24, 1935, to Conrad and Margaret (Mosbrucker) Haag. She was raised and educated in the Center area. On June 24, 1953, she married Pious Pfleger at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center. Together they built a life of farming which began in Solen. In 1972 they moved to New Salem, where they farmed until their retirement in 1997 when they moved to Center. Whether work or play, Irene loved being with family. Her ambitious lifestyle was contagious. She would rally her family to get whatever needed to be done from farming to preparing one of her cherished German meals. Cooking was only one of her many talents. Her grandchildren were recipients of handmade crocheted baptismal gowns. A wedding gown she crocheted for her daughter won her a grand prize ribbon at the state fair. Irene had many hobbies including ceramics, refinishing antiques, reupholstering furniture and playing pinochle, but her favorite of all was going rummaging. Irene would find great deals on jewelry and pass those findings on to her family. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends made her especially happy.
This vibrant woman will be missed by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy (Dale) Ziegler, Mandan, Charlie Lang, Bismarck, Geralyn Roehrich, Mandan, and Stacey (Todd) Bornemann, Center; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Kurt Pfleger, Bismarck, Conrad (Vicky) Pfleger, Mandan, Loni Pfleger, Bismarck; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Edward (Thelma), Great Falls, Mont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pious; her daughter, Mary; two sisters, Anna Mantz and Margie McLane; and two brothers, Jake, and John Haag.
