Melvin was born in Krem on June 7, 1933, the son of Edward and Otillia (Maas) Mittelsteadt. He was baptized July 30, 1933, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Krem, and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, on May 16, 1948. After graduating from Hazen High School on May 31, 1951, he taught grade school math at Krem School No. 4. On April 27, 1954, he began two years of service in the U.S. Army. While stationed in Big Delta Army Arctic Center in Alaska, he married Marcella Josephine Lipp, of Center, on June 7, 1955. He received the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals before transferring to the Army Reserve and returning to North Dakota. After moving to Mandan and working for a local construction company, he began employment with Cass Clay Creamery in 1958, where he worked until retiring in 1996.
Mel had a passion for the outdoors that was rooted in a deep love for God.
As a dedicated husband and father, he passed these values on to his five children by sharing with them his faith and many years of camping, hiking, hunting, trapping, and fishing. A wry sense of humor, a positive attitude and a willingness to lend a helping hand earned him many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Otillia; three sisters, Hulda Mittelsteadt, Helen Columbus and Freda Pinks; and one step-grandchild, Tiffany Eikanas.
