Leonard Steckler, 84, Mandan, died Oct. 31, 2013, at Sanford Health, Bismarck, with his family by his side. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Johnson Kuriappilly as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4:30 p.m., a St. Anthony Verein rosary at 5 p.m. and parish vigil at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Leonard was born July 27, 1929, in St. Anthony, to John and Carolyn (Schmidt) Steckler, where he was raised and educated. He married Hildegard Fleck Oct. 10, 1951, at St. Anthony Church, by the Rev. Amandus Studer. Leonard was active in the St. Anthony parish where he was a member until 1995, when he became a member of Christ the King parish in Mandan. He was a member of the St. Anthony Verein,
St. Peter and Paul Verein of Fallen, Knights of Columbus and the Eagles. He was on various committees of farm organizations and was selected “Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year” in 1963.
Leonard and Hildegard farmed in the St. Anthony area until they moved to Mandan in 1993. After retiring, Leonard enjoyed helping on the farm and attending grandchildren’s sports and musical activities. Leonard and Hildegard enjoyed traveling, dancing (especially the Polka), square dancing and playing cards. He will be loved, missed and cherished by all.
Leonard will be deeply missed by his wife of 62 years, Hildegard, Mandan; two sons, John (Gloria), St. Anthony, and Myron (fiancee Renita Berger), Bismarck; three daughters, Joyce (Jim) Saunders, Monticello, Minn., Charlotte (Mark) Schmidt, Mandan, and Lenora (Lanny) Kenner, Bismarck; his grandchildren, Emily (Matt) Kline, Aaron Steckler (fiancee Laiken Aune), Morriah Saunders, Travis (Casey) Schmidt, Preston Schmidt, Sheena (Jason) Fetzer, Ethan Kenner, Jordan Kenner, Tyler Steckler, Kristina Steckler, Ashley Mormann, Carrie Kenner and James Kenner; eight great-grandchildren; his sisters, Katie Fleck and Clara Gerhardt, Bismarck; and his sisters-in-law, Kathryn Steckler, Elizabeth Fleck, Kathleen Fleck and Ludmilla (George) Ferderer.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Clementine, Peter and Veronica, and Anton Steckler; his sister and brother-in-law, Magdaline and Anton Ressler; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Peter, Mike and Emanuel Fleck, John and Margaret Schmidt, and Ted Gerhardt; a grandson, Joshua Saunders; and daughter-in-law, Marlys Stecker.
In lieu of memorials the family requests donations be sent in Leonard’s name to the Leukemia Cancer Society.
