November 3, 1936 – May 28, 2014
A funeral service for Frank Peter Schreyer, 77, was 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 3 at the First Christian Church in Wheatland with Pastor Shannon Schreyer officiating. Inurnment will be in the Wheatland Cemetery.
Frank Schreyer died peacefully at his home near Wheatland on the morning of Wednesday, May 28.
Frank was born Nov. 3, 1936, in a small farmhouse fourteen miles southwest of Wheatland, to Charles and Maude Schreyer.
Frank grew up in the Cooney Hills West of Wheatland, and it was there that he learned the value of hard work and a love of Wyoming. It was during these formative years that Frank developed a passion for all things mechanical and a love for music. As a second-generation musician following in the footsteps of his father Charles Schreyer, Frank began to play music professionally at an early age at local music halls around the Southeast Wyoming region.
Frank entered the United States Air Force as a Radar Maintenance Technician in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1958 with a hardship discharge because of the premature death of his own father.
Frank married Velma Jean Heard on May 6, 1960. Together, they raised two children, a daughter, Shawn born in 1961 and a son, Shannon born in 1963. Frank lived his entire adult life in Platte County where he enjoyed several different career opportunities including ranch work, construction, diesel mechanics, and electrical appliance repair.
In 1972, Frank and Velma opened their own business, "Mountain View Truck Repair" where Frank repaired over the road diesel trucks until 1987. He later went to work for Georgia Marble and remained employed there until his retirement.
Frank loved all things "outdoors" and he had a passion for big game hunting, fishing, and collecting Indian artifacts across the Wyoming plains. However, the real love of his life was music. He was a phenomenal musician whose early musical influences of his career on the guitar were marked by legendary greats: Chet Atkins, Les Paul, and Merle Travis. Additionally, Frank was well known in the region for his musical excellence as a premier tenor banjo player who was a three-year top award winner at the Rocky Mountain Music Festival, held annually in Colorado.
Frank's professional music career spanned over 60 years and the legacy he leaves behind is marked by many generations of regional musicians who owe their start to the influence he had on their lives. He was particularly proud of his own children and grandchildren who followed suit to become musicians in their own rite.
While there were many challenges in his life, Frank had a high value for friends and family and he loved life! His retirement years were made especially joyful because of his loving relationship with Fran Johnson.
Frank is survived by one sister, Wilhelmina (Schreyer) Adams; his longtime love, Fran Johnson; his daughter and son-in-law, Shawn (Schreyer) and Michael Hoffman of Wheatland; and his son and daughter-in-law Shannon and Nancy (Duncan) Schreyer of Ogden, Utah. Additionally, Frank is survived by his grandchildren: Andreha (Schreyer) Kaiser and her husband Josh, Taylor Derra, Caleb Schreyer, Lydia (Schreyer) Bricker and her husband Ethan, Seth Schreyer, and Anna Schreyer, and his two great grandchildren, Landon and Hayden Kaiser.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Maude (Walker) Schreyer; his wife, Velma Jean (Heard) Schreyer; a brother, James Perdue; and three sisters, Francis (Perdue) Schirmer, Shirley (Schreyer) Reed, and Mildred (Schreyer) Brecht. Frank was also preceded in death by one great grandson, Dallas J. Hoffman.
A memorial to the Feed the Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101-0036 would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel of Wheatland.
