ObituaryBiography
Edmund A. Kopp was born on December 23rd, 1918, the son and 6th child of Pius Kopp and Lina Zimmerman Kopp in Richardton, North Dakota. He was born and raised on the Kopp family farm. As a boy, he attended St. Mary's Elementary School and later graduated from Assumption Abbey High School in 1937.
Edmund's mother passed away in 1928 when he was 9 years old, leaving Pius to raise Edmund and his ten brothers and sisters. Pius passed away in 1930 leaving eleven children on the farm.
In April of 1942 at the age of 23, Eddie entered the United States Army and spent time in both the Aleutian Islands and the Philippines during World War II. While still in the Army, on April 7th 1945, Eddie married Irene Frankenhauser, a local Richardton girl, at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. They welcomed their first child, Doran Walter, on January 23rd, 1946 in their home town, Richardton.
The young family moved to Spokane, Washington where they lived for several years before moving to Southern California where Ed worked upholstery and carpentry. In January 1951, Eddie and Irene's daughter, Kathleen Irene, became the newest addition to the family. Four years later the family moved to Escondido, California where Eddie built houses. In 1959, the family moved to Turlock, California where, to this day, many of the houses that Edmund built still stand.
Edmund would eventually have three grandchildren. The first, Eric Matthew Johnson. was born in 1980. The second grandson, Ryan Andrew Johnson, was born in 1983 and Eddie's only granddaughter, Lindsay Irene Kopp, was born in 1994. Eddie's beloved wife passed away in 1994 in Modesto, California. Following Irene's death, Eddie and the Johnson family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Through the years some of Eddie's passions included rock hunting and collecting books. His vast collection of books eventually earned his home the nickname of "The Library" among family members. He was a fountain of knowledge about his hometown and the many people who lived there throughout the years. Reading was a favorite past-time until, unfortunately, his eyesight diminished to the point that reading became very difficult. He then transitioned fairly easily to books on tape and CD and continued to enjoy his love of books.
Edmund passed away quietly in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 27th, 2012. He was 93 years old.
Edmund will most certainly be missed by his family and friends.
