Birth: Aug. 26, 1915 Death: May 22, 2002 Johnstown Tribune-Democrat, May 25, 2002 JONES - Leona Ruth, 86, of 46 Laura Lee Blvd., Leola, Pa., died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Community Hospital of Lancaster, Pa., of natural causes. Born in Hooversville, she was the daughter of the late Clarence S. and Alma A. (Manges) Jones. She was married to the late G.Ray Thomas. He died in 1957. Formerly of Hooversville, she was active there in the Ridge Church of the Brethren as a young people's Sunday school teacher, adult advisor for the youth group, sang in the choir, and served as chorister and Sunday school secretary. She and her sister, Wiltrude, were well-known in the Johnstown area as "The Jones Sister Duet." She was also a renowned poetess and nurse. She graduated from Ferndale High School, Johnstown, in 1933; graduated from Chicago School of Nursing in 1953; and she graduated from the Lancaster Vo-Tech program for practical nurses in 1971. In the early '50s she served as superintendent of nurses and head nurse, at the Windber Church of the Brethren Home for several years. She also served as practical nurse at Mercy Hospital, Johnstown, 6t years before entering civil service at the Crippled Children's Hospital, Elizabethtown, Pa. She served at various nursing homes in the Lancaster area in the supervisory capacity. She was employed on the staff at St. Joseph Hospital, and the Osteopathic Hospital, both in Lancaster. The last few years she has done private duty for nurses available and the visiting nurses home care association of Lancaster, Pa. Most recently she was a member of: Ephrata Church of the Brethren; Philadelphia and Lancaster chapters of Lupus Foundation; International Poetry Society, Washington, D.C., where she wrote poetry and won awards from the society; National Library of Poetry; National Association of Nurses; National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare; Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum; Who's Who of Poetry for three years; 1988-1992 Golden Poet awards from World of Poetry. Surviving are one son, Lauren A., husband of Betty Thomas, Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three stepgrandchildren; one sister, Ada G. Barkley, Daytona Beach, Fla.
