Born Sept. 15, 1925, in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was the daughter of Roy W. and Julia (Plum) Kennedy. She graduated from Marshall-town High School and then enrolled in McPherson College, in Kansas, where she met her future husband, A. Blair Helman. They married in 1947.
She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from McPherson and subsequently studied at three seminaries. She was awarded two honorary degrees; a Doctor of Letters degree from McPherson, in 1987, and a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Manchester College, in 1997.
Her sensitive spirit and creative genius were noted when she taught public school, in Kansas. An ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren, she was also a writer, poet, playwright, and popular speaker.
In addition to her ministerial duties, she was author of four books, contributed to others, and wrote numerous articles for religious journals. Dr. Helman was founder of Art for Hunger and The Joyful Scribes, a religious greeting card company.
For 30 years as the wife of the president of Manchester College, she was a good friend to faculty, students and community residents and an exuberant hostess. Many of the public events she planned remain legendary and are fondly remembered. She was a member of many religious, educational and civic organizations. Included in her service was 12 years as a member of the Board of Governors of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., a columnist for The Messenger for 13 years, and coordinator of the Association for the Arts in the Church of the Brethren for 14 years.
Along with her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Harriet "Bunny" (Patrick) Hill of Wichita, Kan. and Patricia (Raymond) Magaro of Columbus, Ind.; two sisters, Lois Blackburn of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Kathryn Hogancamp of Independence, Mo.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph. Memorial service is 2 p.m. Friday at Manchester Church of the Brethren. Visitation is following the service.
