Sept. 9, 1931 - June 3, 2007
Clifton LeRoy Backhaus, 75, of Dunnigan died Sunday, June 3, 2007 in Grass Valley.
Mr. Backhaus was the son of William and Emma Backhaus and was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Wishek, N.D. He enlisted in the National Guard in March 1950 and served in the Korean War and was discharged in March 1953. He was a member of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association and was also involved in hunting, fishing and camping.
Mr. Backhaus married Adella Schnabel on Aug. 9, 1953, in Venturia, N.D., moved to South Dakota and then in 1957 to Seattle, Wash., before coming to California. In 1972 he moved the family to Dunnigan and bought a towing business and wrecking yard. He ran the yard and towed with his sons for 35 years.
Mr. Backhaus is survived by his wife of 53 years, Adella; daughter, Sherry and her husband Mike Carrere of Fort Bragg; three sons, Steven and Valerie Backhaus of Ely, Nev., Gregory of Woodland, and Spencer and fiancŽ Carnation of Dunnigan and their step-daughter Megan; and four grandchildren, Kristen and Christopher Sutteer, and Brandon and Stefanie Backhaus. He is also survived by five sisters as well as a brother-in-law, Harold and Esther Schnabel; and sister-in-law Verna Schnabel. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Loved ones that preceded him in death were his parents, William and Emma Backhaus, two uncles, Henry and Herman Backhaus; two brothers, Raymond and Robert; brother-in-laws Floral Schnabel and Helmut Rudolph, a sister, and half-sister.
Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity or the Alta Regional Center in Woodland.
Services: A visitation was held Friday, June 8, at McNary's Funeral Home in Woodland. A memorial service was held Saturday, June 9, also at McNary's which was officiated by Matt Woodworth of Arbuckle Community Baptist Church. Burial was held at Mary's Cemetery in Yolo. McNary's Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
