Atlanta and Environs: A Chronicle of Its People and Events, 1880s-1930s, by Franklin Miller Garrett, pg. 91
During the early morning hours of March 18, 1885, two Atlanta landmarks, the James Bank Block, northeast corner of Whitehall and Alabama streets and the Central Bank Block, adjoining on Whitehall Street, were destroyed by fire of undetermined origin.
The upper floors of the James Bank Block, a five-story brick structure, were occupied as living quarters. The fire therefore, resulted tragically when two of the roomers, Joseph H. Canfield and Edward Mercer, perished in the flames.
Mercer, 54, was blown down an elevator shaft by an explosion of combustibles. A well-known Atlantan for many years, he was born in Dublin, Ireland, and was a rigger by trade. He came to America at an early age, and after service in the Confederate Navy, settled in Atlanta. Here he became a grading contractor, but not long afterward purchased an interest in the Atlanta City Brewery (now Atlantic Company) at Collins and Harris streets. For the last several years of his life he was the proprietor of two large saloons and of the European Restaurant on Whitehall Street. He was buried in Oakland Cemetery.
