Howard R. Thielbar was born December 8, 1910 to George W. and Elizabeth Dully Thielbar at Leslie Station, Elm Grove Township, Tazewell County, Illinois, Howard graduated from Morton Township High School in 1929. He was employed by Peoria Lumber and Millwork Company until the Depression forced his layoff. Howard worked many jobs on the Bernshousan farm, mowed lawns including landscaping, electrical work and was a salesman with the various products of silk stockings to coffee. He moved to Pekin and was hired as a stave jointer for the Herget Cooper Shop, making barrels for the Distillery. In 1934, Howard and his brother purchased the Platner Brothers Dairy delivering bottled milk products. In 1935, he accepted employment with the Midwest Dairy Engineers of Lafayette, Indiana selling and delivering products in Western Illinois and Eastern Missouri and Eastern Iowa until 1937 May 15, 1937, Howard married Dora F. Miller. He accepted employment with Baby Bear Baking selling bakery products in Peoria and Pekin. In 1938, he worked as a salesman for the Grand Union Tea Company selling teas from Peoria to Henry, Illinois. In 1940, he and Dora purchased a farm in Woodford County where they farmed and raised Milking Shorthorns until the spring of 1948. While on the farm, they became foster parents to Sue Jane Jackson and Frank D. Hackney. In 1948, they moved to Pekin Heights, Pekin, Illinois where they built a new home. Howard was employed at Pekin Municipal Golf Course. In his spare time, he wired houses for friends, and repaired lawn mowers and garden tractors. He and Dora were members of St. Paul United Church of Christ. He was a Sunday school Superintendent and teacher, member and President of the Churchmen's Brotherhood and President of Illinois United Churchmen Fellowship Howard was employed in 1950 by Commonwealth Edison Electric Pekin Generation Station. He transferred to the Kincaid Station, moving to Edinburg, Illinois and retired as Electrical maintenance Foreman in 1974 Howard's and Dora's yard in Edinburg was filled with vegetables and flowers for every season and fruit trees lined the borders. He was known as an avid gardener with garlic being one of his specialties. Howard has been a member of the LOESS Rock Club in Springfield for more than 40 years. He has collected rocks and minerals from quarries, creek beds and state parks all over the country including Alaska. He cut and polished many of his finds. Some turned up in beautiful bolas and belt buckles. He displayed and demonstrated his works at the annual rock show at the fairgrounds up till he was 99 years old. He and Dora traveled throughout the United States visiting family, friends and enjoying rock trips. After a prolonged illness, his beloved Dora preceded him in death February, 2002. Howard was a naturalist and the oldest volunteer teacher at Prairie Rose Arts and Science Program in the summer of 2004. He took up Tai Chi. After moving to Springfield in 2006, Howard began volunteering at Wilcox and Black Hawk Elementary Schools, Springfield, Illinois teaching oral history. He encouraged the students to learn to love to read. He was given an award by the Springfield Board of Education in the fall of 2009. Howard married his caretaker and companion, Mary Bridget Hunter in the spring of 2011. Howard was known for his love of God and people. He loved working with children, teaching about fossils and rocks, doing lapidary work. Howard was known throughout his neighborhood in Lindsay Place as he walked every day greeting all he encountered. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. He loved his church family as they loved him. They were faithful friends visiting him at Lewis Memorial Christian Village on a regular basis where he resided until his death Howard was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, George and Hazel Thielbar, his first wife Dora Miller Thielbar, his foster children, Frank Hackney and Sue Keller. He leaves his wife Mary Bridget Thielbar, his stepdaughter, Amy Corrine (Gary) MacDonald, granddaughters, Charlene (Ed) Ohlinger of W. Virginia, Doris Kay (Bruce) Williams of Arkansas, his good friend Mike Nuding and many nieces and nephews. Howard was known for his faith and his wisdom. He was grateful for everything and everyone. He left such gifts playing the harmonica, storytelling, teaching children, being a friend, father, grandfather and uncle. His memorial will be savored forever. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013 until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Springfield. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2100 S.
