Daryl was born on September 6, 1930 in Lenora, KS, the daughter of Jesse and Eula (Shover) Wilcox. Her lifelong career in education began with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Baker University. After teaching for 25 years at Douglas County, KS, Daryl earned her master's degree from Kansas University. She taught for a brief time in Lawrence, KS, before moving out to Gunnison, CO where she taught Special Education for ten years. Her passion for helping students pushed her to pursue her doctorate in Learning Disabilities at KU. Moving again, she spent time teaching at Minot State University before heading down to Texas A&M at Prairie View. At that time, she worked as a professor of Special Education and Administrator in charge of 27 education programs. She began working at Wayne State College in 1993, serving as a professor and advisor. Daryl was an innovator in her field and helped create several programs in Northeast Nebraska, such as TOWER and EDITS. She also served on several area boards including ESU #1 and Haven House.
A positive force in Special Education and Social Justice, Daryl's dedication to others was evident in everything she did. She was selfless and humble, and somehow always knew how to look on the bright side of life to provide guidance to family, friends, students, and strangers alike. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and cheering on her KU Jayhawks. Her vibrant spirit touched the lives of countless people and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by a son, Glenn (Hoa) Jehle of Huntsville, AL; daughter, Tina Jehle of Havlock, IA; five grandchildren, Alexis, Jared, Xuan, Tuan, and Ben, and many great grandchildren.
Daryl was preceded in death by her parents and brother Donald Wilcox.
