George Wirtz was born Oct. 19, 1903, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the son of Jacob and Johanna (Berger) Wirtz. His family moved to the United States in 1904 and settled in Mandan.
Dr. Wirtz graduated from Mandan High School in 1921 and entered Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee, Wis. He graduated in 1925 and returned to his home town where he practiced until his retirement in 1989. On June 4, 1928, he married Margaret Stein in Mandan. They had two sons, Dr. James G. Wirtz and Dr. Richard G. Wirtz. Both were also graduates of Marquette University School of Dentistry and both sons joined their father in the practice of dentistry in Mandan. George is a life member of the American Dental Association, North Dakota State Dental Association and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. George married Mac Makelky in Mandan on Oct. 14, 1989.
He served on the North Dakota State Board of Dental Examiners, and received a special award from the board for outstanding service. George also served on the Central Regional Dental Testing Board, and was Chairman of the Legislative Committe of the North Dakota State Dental Association and was active in updating and the revision of the present Dental Practice Act. It is very likely that he is the oldest person to attain this accomplishment. In 1986 he received honorary recognition for 51 years of outstanding service to the youth at the State Industrial School in Mandan. He is a member of the Custer District Health Unit, served on the Mandan Hospital staff, and was a member of the Mandan Public School Board for nine years. He was a member of the Salvation Army Board, member of Knights of Columbus, Mandan Elks and Moose, and served as state chief ranger of the Catholic Order of Foresters.
His hobbies, the usual hunting and fishing and woodworking. The unusual, boxing. For a number of years, he conducted a private gym with as many as eight or 10 students. One of whom became a golden glove champion, and later boxed his way through dental school.
George is survived by his wife, Mac; and one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Vivian Wirtz, all of Mandan; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret, who died on Aug. 27, 1987; his son and daughter-in-law, James and Mary Wirtz; and two sisters, Clementine and Frances. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
