ASHLEY -- Roy Schnabel, 93, Ashley, died Dec. 24, 1999, in the Ashley nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Venturia Baptist Church, with the Rev. Randy Tschetter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon-7 p.m. today at Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Roy Schnabel, son of Peter P. and Sophia (Sattler) Schnabel, was born Dec. 14, 1906, northwest of Venturia. He grew up and attended country school northwest of Venturia. He worked on the family farm. He was saved in 1926 and baptized in Hoskin's Lake by the Rev. Adolph Alf.
He was united in marriage to Martha Hagel on Dec. 8, 1929, at Kassal Church, a rural station of Venturia Baptist Church. They made their home on the family homestead. They farmed 11 miles northeast of Venturia for 41 years, raising small grains and livestock. They retired and moved into Ashley in December of 1970. His wife died Oct. 19, 1991. he continued to make Ashley his home.
He loved farming and in his retirement he enjoyed gardening and making things grow. The joy of his life was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a member of Venturia Baptist Church where he was a past member of the Men's Quartet and Church Choir. He was a member of Venturia Baptist Church Men's Brotherhood, was a past trustee, usher, Sunday school clerk and Sunday school teacher. He also served on the Blumenthal School Board.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Delmar and Jean, Ashley; two grandchildren, James Schnabel, Venturia, and Betty DeBoer, TwinBrooks, S.D.; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sisters; and two brothers.
Honorary casketbearers will be all of the Ashley Medical Center's Nursing Staff.
Casketbearers will be James Schnabel, DeLane Dollinger and Clarence Bender, all of Venturia, Loren DeBoer, Twin Brooks, S.D., Dennis Hagel, Minot, and Milbert Dollinger, Ashley.
The organist will be Betty DeBoer and the pianist will be Pamela Schnabel. There will be duets by James Schnabel and Pamela Schnabel, and Milbert Dollinger and the Rev. Randy Tschetter. There will also be a piano solo by Betty DeBoer.
