OBITUARY: Leona A. Toennies, 87, of Albers, IL died on Sunday, June 12, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital, Breese, IL. She was born on August 22, 1917, in Damiansville, IL, daughter of George and Mary (Luepke) Wobbe. She married Martin H. Toennies on September 6, 1937, in Damiansville, IL and he preceded her in death on July 13, 1991. She is survived by two sons, Dennis Toennies and wife Patricia, of Albers, IL, and Ronald Toennies and wife Susan of Aviston, IL; two daughters, Darlene Billhartz and husband Daniel of New Baden, IL and Marilyn R. Toennies of Germantown, IL; eight grandchildren, Penny Etter and husband Craig, Kimberly Skrob and husband Scott, Curtis Toennies and wife Crissy, Deron Toennies and wife Andrea, Lynn Maue and husband Bob, Mark Billhartz and wife Lynn, Michael Billhartz, and Rhonda O?Brien and husband Mike; 15 great-grandchildren, one due August 2005; and one step great- grandchild; one brother, Louis Wobbe and wife Angela of Damiansville, IL; four sisters, Marie Breiner of Damiansville, IL, Florence French and husband Durrel of Belleville, IL, Estelle Stempel of New Baden, IL and Verena Haake of Germantown, IL. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Rodney Toennies and Renee Toennies; one brother, Edwin W. Wobbe; three sisters, Elsie Netemeyer, Dorothy Singler and Regina Thien; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, George Netemeyer, Raymond Singler, Vincent Thien, Fred Breiner, Gene Stempel, Herbert Haake, Albert & Mary Toennies, Alphonse & Frances Toennies, Ann & Frank Dulle and Catherine & Leo Determan. Mrs. Toennies was a homemaker and she loved playing bingo, cards and she was an avid quilter. She was a member of St. Bernard Parish and Ladies Sodality and the American Legion Post 1026 Auxiliary. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Albers, IL with Msgr. Donald Eichenseer officiating. Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Albers, IL. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Hempen Funeral Home in Albers, IL. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and the rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to St. Bernard Parish and will be received at the funeral home.
