Donn L. Schelling, age 73, of Michigan City, died Saturday, April 19 at St. Anthony Memorial Health Care Center, Michigan City. Services will be held Thursday, April 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home with military rites to be performed by VFW Post #2536 and American Legion Post #37. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 23 from 2 to 7 p.m. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date. He was born January 4, 1935 in Michigan City to Donald E. and Helen R. (Tromley) Schelling, both of whom preceded him in death. On July 2, 1961 in Michigan City, he married Lorna Mae Kring, she preceded him in death on August 7, 2000.
Surviving are sons Lee A. (Kelly) Schelling and Karl L. Schelling, both of Michigan City. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force in the late 1950’s, serving in England. There he specialized in maintenance of nuclear munitions as part of a cold war response team. He was a published photographer, specializing in lakefront photos and he worked for more than a decade as a correspondent photographer for the South Bend Tribune. He was a former member of the Michigan City Power Squadron, worked at Josam Mfg. for more than 30 years as a lead export expediter, and then worked at Amoco Oil Refinery, Whiting, in the Greaseworks Division. He was a former security officer with Security, Inc. and also was a lieutenant with the Michigan City Civil Defense for many years.
Donn was a member of the National Rifle Assoc., the Michigan City Senior Center and the American Legion John Franklin Miller Post #37. He enjoyed shooting, photography, nautical activities, his cat, and was an expert hobbiest in astronomy. He enjoyed many hours at his computers and had friends from coast to coast. He was an avid speed reader, having read thousands of books during his lifetime.
Donn loved his late wife, sons, numerous relatives and friends who were a part of his life. He loved the Hawaiian “hang loose” lifestye. His loving and devoted family wish to honor their father’s passion by dressing Hawaiian casual, all who attend services are encouraged to celebrate life “Hawaiian Style”.
