- [S927] Obituary.
2011, at a Bismarck care center. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Allen Wagner officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Hilda Adeline Gallagher was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Burnstad, to August and Pauline (Reich) Lehr. As the oldest of nine children, she helped raise her younger brothers and sister. While working in Jamestown, she met her future husband, Delmer Gallagher. As he went to serve his country in World War II, Hilda also served the war effort by working in tank manufacturing plants in Michigan, Washington and California.
When Del came home, they were married on Jan. 12, 1946. The wedding reception was held at Hilda’s family farm. A North Dakota blizzard kept the wedding guests at the farm for a few days until a team of horses could get everybody out. Delmer and Hilda made their home in Bismarck.
Hilda’s creative avenues included: ceramics, sewing, gardening and cake decorating. Delivering a wedding cake became a family project. She also worked at Hoskins Meyers Greenhouse during planting season. Most people who sat down at her table were offered a choice of three different pies. Her garden on 26th Street and Avenue B was featured on the local news. Her last project was a baby blanket for her soon-to-be born second great-granddaughter.
Family members finding comfort in special memories are her children, Arlys Cole, North Olmsted, Ohio, Linda (Loren) Collins, North Bend, Ore., Del Gallagher, Bismarck, and Debbie (Rick) Gardner, Lakewood, Ohio; her grandchildren, Charles Cole, Chicago, Susan Cole, Cleveland, Ohio, Craig (Kate) Cole, Louisville, Ky., Beth Phelps, Lakewood, Ohio, Delmar (Jen) Gallagher III, Bismarck, and Brent Gallagher, Bismarck; her great-granddaughter, Paige Freidt; her brothers, Lawrence (LaVern) Lehr, Wishek, Marvin (Frances) Lehr, Ashley, LeRoy (Veronica) Lehr, Albuquerque, N.M., and EuGene Lehr, Bismarck; her sister, Vera Shelton, Missoula, Mont.; one sister-in-law, Edith Lehr, Wishek; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Delmer, who died in October 2010; her parents; two brothers, Ivan and Elmer; and one sister, Viola Schweitz.
