The Funeral Service for Alma Martell, age 84 of Elgin, who was a longtime employee at the Economy Drug Store in Elgin, will be held at 10:30am Friday, November 21, 2008 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin. Pastor Jerry will officiate with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Elgin.
Special music will be provided by Bonnie Lee.
Serving as casketbearers are Terry and Jill Martell, Corey Martell, Pamela and Daryl Aaberg, Jim and Patty Zimmerman. All of Alma's grand and great grandchildren are considered honorary bearers.
ALMA MARTELL was born January 25, 1924 in Elgin, ND to Jacob and Christina (Guthmiller) Martell. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Zion Lutheran Church in Elgin. Alma grew up on a farm near Elgin and attended Elgin Public School graduating with the Class of 1941. She was united in marriage to August Martell on July 20, 1941 at Wibaux, MT. They moved to Orlando, FL where August served in the U.S. Army Air Force. Following his discharge, they returned to Elgin. Alma worked at Busch's Dry Cleaners until 1952. Alma began working at the Economy Drug Store where she worked until retiring in 1996.
Her husband August passed away in December of 1980. Alma continued to live in her home, and when her health began to fail, she moved into Dakota Hills. She resided at the Jacobson Memorial Care Center in Elgin for one year, and on March 26, 2007, she moved to St. Benedict's Health Center in Dickinson.
Alma passed from this life on Saturday morning, November 15, 2008 at St. Benedict's Health Center in Dickinson at the age of 84 years, 9 months, 20 days.
She was a Charter Member of the Elgin Lioness Club and the Dakota Lions Club. She was also a member of the Friendship Homemakers Club and the Bits and Pieces Quilting Club. Alma enjoyed bowling, gardening, quilting, fishing, playing cards, and restoring dolls and doing all types of craftwork.
Surviving family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Daryl Aaberg, Rochester, MN; 2 sons and 1 daughter-in-law, Terry and Jill Martell, Payson, AZ; Corey Martell, Stewartville, MN; 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; 1 brother, August Martell, Newberg, OR; 2 sisters and one brother-in-law, Elinor and Emmett Hoks, Appleton, WI; Olga Hammond, Lebanon, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, August; and 8 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be on Thursday, 1:00 to 7:00pm at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and on Friday one hour prior to services at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin.
