Dick Hirsch died on 9/20/09 after a long illness. He resided at 10550 Wilshire Boulevard in the Westwood district of Los Angeles, California at the time of his death.
Born in Chicago on 11/15/21 to Albert and Mae Hirsch, he attended the University of Illinois and, in 1943, married his college sweetheart, Lorry Silverman.
In 1946, they moved to Los Angeles. He graduated from U.C.L.A. in 1947 with a degree in accounting.
Dick was a bombardier in World War II. Based in Italy, he ran a craps game, highlighted in the novel Catch 22. He was shot down by the Nazis over Avignon in 1944, rescued by the French Resistance, and helped them lay the groundwork for the Allied invasion. In 1997, he was honored in Provence by his rescuers and hundreds of members of the Resistance.
Dick was a creative entrepreneur. In the 1950s, he owned tungsten mines in Mexico and founded Chef Whiz, a forerunner of the fast food and vending machine industries. He was managing partner of J.K Lasser in Los Angeles and eventually joined Touche-Ross, where he retired as a partner in 1988. He then joined City National Bank, heading up a merger and acquisition unit. He was a founding member of Leo Baeck Temple and a longtime member of Brentwood Country Club.
He is survived by his children Susie Curtis of Los Angeles and Bill Hirsch of Oakland; his grandchildren Casey Curtis, Andy Curtis, Brady Hirsch and Jack Hirsch; his daughter-in-law, Betsy Crabtree; his sisters Flory Leviton of Indianapolis; Joan Rubin of Los Angeles; and Pat Gainsborough of Sarasota; and his companion Natalie Goodman. His first wife, Lorry, died in 1980; his second wife, Irene, died in 2003.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Hillside Mortuary in Culver City, followed by a reception at Brentwood Country Club.
