NEW SALEM -- Joseph Schaner Jr., 71, New Salem, died July 15, 1999, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Pius Catholic Church, New Salem, with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating. Burial will be in St. Pius Cemetery, New Salem.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church, where a rosary and parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue Monday morning until time of services.
Joseph Schaner Jr. was born on Feb. 11, 1928, in New Salem, the son of Joseph Sr. and Marianne (Matz) Schaner. He lived his entire life on his home farm east of New Salem and married Clara Hoger on March 31, 1948. In addition to driving bus for the New Salem schools, he worked on the coal mines. He farmed continuously throughout his lifetime until he was forced to retire due to health problems in 1988.
Joe was an active member of his community and in the surrounding area. He had been the director of the rural fire department since 1972 and was also a member of the Eagles, Elks and Moose Clubs, the New Salem Sportsmen's Club and the local weigh station. A member of St. Anthony Verein, he was on his parish's building and cemetery committees and also served as a trustee. In his leisure time, Joe loved to dance and listen to polka music. An ardent collector of antiques and toy tractors, he liked fishing and gardening. Known to enjoy a good game of cards, Joe loved spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Clara; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Sherwin Seeger, Bismarck, Jackie and Leslie Doll, and Gale and Kevin Norton, all of New Salem; 11 grandchildren, Cindy and Scott Weigum, Bismarck, Mike Seeger, Bismarck, Jason and Angie Doll, New Salem, Joyal Doll, Fargo, Jenna and Jenae Doll, New Salem, Stacy Norton, Minot, Reese Norton, Bismarck, and Mindy Norton, New Salem; one sister, Barbara Mosbrucker, New Salem; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Frank and Veronica Schaner, and Frances Schaner, all of New Salem.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Bobbie Seeger; his parents; five sisters, Annie Doll, Perpetua Olheiser, Margaret Doll, Agnes Mosbrucker and Maggie Benfiet; and two brothers, Leo and Steve Schaner. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Bismarck)
