Birth: Apr. 2, 1874 Chicago Cook County Illinois, USA Death: Jun. 4, 1904 Central City Lawrence County South Dakota, USA Born Apr. 2, 1874 Died June 4, 1904 He is not dead but sleeping Lead Daily Call, June 6, 1904 - "After over two days of diligent and continuous searching along the banks of Whitewood creek, the body of Matt Bender, the unfortunate young man who was drowned at Central City Saturday afternoon while assisting in the protection of the Brewery property, was recovered this forenoon down near the Northwestern round house in the lower part of Deadwood, and in the immediate vicinity of the place where the body of Mrs. Chandler, who was drowned at Pluma in the flood of 1883, was found...The deceased has resided in the Hills since early boyhood...He leaves to mourn for him a wife and one child, residing in Lead, and a father and mother who are now residing in California, also a brother in Lead. The remains were brought to Lead by Undertaker Marcoux this afternoon...His parents, who reside at Los Angeles, have been notified of the untimely death of their son, and are now on their way here to attend the funeral which will take place either Wednesday or Thursday." Lead Daily Call, June 13, 1904 - "The funeral of Matt Bender took place from the Congregational church yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, the same being conducted by Rev. Bartlett. The same was largely attended, especially by the Eagles, there being 130 of the members of the order in the funeral procession. Interment took place in the South Lead cemetery." The 1880 U.S. Census for Lead, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory (June 12, 1880) finds Mathew Bender, age 6, residing with his parents, Mathew & Walba Bender as well as with a sister Mary, age 7 and a brother Fred, age 2. The census records Mathew Bender Jr. as having been born in Illinois. The father's occupation was given as "Brewer," - born in Germany. QUEEN CITY MAIL WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 1904 At Central City the brewery was flooded and while attempting to save some of the stock Saturday, three of the employees were thrown into the seething water. One of them, Matt Bender, was washed down and drowned. His body was not recovered until Monday morning. The Elkhorn railroad track was destroyed a distance of 500 feet.
