Henry Schumacher was born March 29, 1924, at rural Eureka, S.D., to Jacob and Katharina (Koerner) Schumacher. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church. He helped on the farm when two of his brothers served in World War I I. He then went to Kansas City to work for Coleman Stove and Boeing Airplane. He continued to farm until he decided to become a carpenter/contractor after working with his father. He built many houses in the Long Lake and Leola area and did cabinet work. He built an addition to the Long Lake Church, which gave him great joy. When in Leola, Henry married Laura M. Breitag on Nov. 24, 1960. They made their home in Leola and moved several times as Henry built homes. They lived there until the time of his death. Henry was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and was in the Men's Choir and Mixed Choir there. He was a past member of Lutheran Brotherhood, Better Leola Club, Country Club, Development Corp. and Kenwood Manor Board until the time of his death and was also a member of Long Lake Band and Merry Maker's orchestra. Henry loved music. He enjoyed traveling, especially to see family and to family gatherings. Woodworking brought Henry great joy.
