NEW ALBANY TRIBUNE OBITUARY – 09/06/2005
A funeral Mass for Huston F. Ernstberger, 74, of Edwardsville, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Albany, with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. He died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, peacefully at his home with his family at his side. He was born May 11, 1931, in Corydon, the third child of Frank Anthony and Mildred Azelia Kochert Ernstberger. He attended both St. Meinrad and Corydon High Schools. He married Mary Ruth Gettelfinger of Ramsey, on Nov. 11, 1952. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Army Corps of Engineers. He owned and operated H.F. Ernstberger and Sons Body and Paint Shop in Corydon. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Albany, and Pope John Paul II Knights of Columbus, Lanesville. Over the years he served in numerous roles in his parish and community, living a life dedicated to faith, family and friends. Among his many interests were reading, tending to his property and competitive games of golf, pool and cards. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Ruth Gettelfinger Ernstberger; his 11 children and their spouses and 33 grandchildren; Greg, Jan, Aaron, Erika, Josh and Matthew Ernstberger; Eric, Lisa, Seth, Abel, Luke, Clare and Cecelia Ernstberger; Jerry, Melinda, Jonathan and Leah Ernstberger; Hugh, Jayne, Amanda and Alyson Ernstberger; Mark, Marcia, Emily, Melissa, Zachary and Hillary Ernstberger; David, Gail, Audrey, Meredith and Jack Ernstberger; Fred, Kathy, Ellen, Amelia and Adam Ernstberger; Ted, Becky, Elizabeth, Grace, Nate, Mary Frances and Thomas Ernstberger; Michael, Mary Jo, Abby and Madeline Purcell; Marcia Marie Ernstberger and Mary, Monica, Andrew, Walt and Gwenna Lewis. He is also survived by three brothers, Vernon, Gilbert and Paul Ernstberger; and seven sisters, Iona Miller, Jane Ponto, Ruth Shewmaker, Melva Gates, Annette Akers, Rita Drury and Nancy Matthews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Luke Stephen Ernstberger I, Olivia Marion Ernstberger and William Anthony Ernstberger. Visitation at Generations Funeral Home, 3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 6, and from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions in his memory to Providence High School, Mt. St. Francis Retreat Center or Hospice and Palliative Care of Southern Indiana.

Huston F. Ernstberger, 74, of Edwardsville died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at his home. A native of Corydon, born May 11, 1931, he was the son of Frank Anthony and Mildred Azelia Kochert Ernstberger. He owned and operated H. F. Ernstberger & Sons Body and Paint Shop in Corydon and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Albany and Pope John Paul II Knights of Columbus in Lanesville. He served in numerous roles in his parish and community. He attended both St. Meinrad and Corydon high schools and was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Army Corps of Engineers. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Mary Ruth Gettelfinger; eight sons, Greg, Eric, Jerry, Hugh, Mark, David, Fred and Ted Ernstberger; three daughters, Mary Jo Purcell, Marcia Marie Ernstberger and Monica Lewis; three brothers, Vernon, Gilbert and Paul Ernstberger; seven sisters, Iona Miller, Jane Ponto, Ruth Shewmaker, Melva Gates, Annette Akers, Rita Drury and Nancy Matthews, and 33 grandchildren. Visitation: Wednesday, Sept. 7, from noon to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Generations Funeral Home in New Albany. Funeral Mass: Thursday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Albany with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and noon-8 p.m. Wednesday at Generations Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Providence High School, Mt. St. Francis Retreat Center or Hospice & Palliative Care of Southern Indiana.
