Clarence Matt Gress, 74, Mandan, died April 13, 2005, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707 and the American Legion Post 20.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at teh church.
Clarence was born May 25, 1930, in Mandan, he was the son of Anton and Catherine (Boehm) Gress.
Clarence served in the United States Navy on the ship USS Coral Sea from 1948 to 1952, and received the Good Conduct Medal. After leaving the military, Clarence married Opal Dickson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. Their first daughter Susanah Marie was born in Mandan in 1953, and the second daughter Kathryn Jane was born in Odessa, Texas, in 1956. Clarence and Opal were later divorced.
Clarence belonged to the Teamsters and was an oil shooter and truck driver. He belonged to L.O.W. (Loaners on Wheels) where he traveled extensively and enjoyed playing music, writing songs and being with friends. Clarence loved to sing and play his guitar. He never missed an opportunity to entertain and was loved by so many. You never knew when he would stop by to visit and you were always sad to see him go.
Everyone knew him by his CB handle "Big Bully". His grandchildren fondly referred to him as "Grandpa Bear." Clarence found much comfort with his faith in God and attended church whenever possible during his travels.
Clarence will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, baby Jack; and one sister, Eva Pope.
