Memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, with the Rev. Ed Weiner officiating. Burial of her ashes will be held at a later date in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Cremation has taken place. Rosemary Pope was born Aug. 11, 1923, in rural Mandan, the daughter of Anton and Catherine (Boehm) Gress. She was raised and attended school in Mandan. In 1946, she married John Pope. She worked for many years at Collin's Department Store, managed the Gift House Stamp Center and was an Avon representative. In 1971, Rosemary and Johnnie retired and moved to Las Cruces, N.M. After Johnnie passed away in 1980, she continued to live and work in Las Cruces until April 2005. Rosemary spent these years working for her church and dedicating her life to helping the poor and singing in a senior choir. In April 2005, she moved back to Bismarck to be closer to her family that will miss her greatly. She is survived by her daughters, Carol Carlson, Mandan, and Doris Kartes, Bismarck; her brother, Anton (Lila) Gress, Glendive, Mont.; her grandchildren, Jeb (Rhea) Carlson, Sarah Carlson, Chris (Jen) Walker and Jesse Kartes; her great-grandchildren, Jake, Dane, Max Carlson, Naomi Morgan and Cy Walker; and Bill Chilton, Las Cruces, N.M., her close companion for 15 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her sister, Eva Pope; and her brother, Clarence Gress. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for all their compassion, care and friendship. We really love you all!
