Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral and Cremation Service, Bismarck, where rosary services will be held at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Tuesday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
Adam was born Dec. 19, 1935, in St. Anthony, to Paul and Magdalena (Wetsch) Schaff. He was raised in the St. Anthony area, where he attended school at St. Anthony Parochial School, then left to work on the family farm. He attended diesel mechanic school in Fargo.
He married Patricia Taghon Sept. 21, 1964, at Christ the King Church in Mandan. They lived in Mandan for several years and were blessed with four children.
In 1961, he worked as a mechanic with his family at Mandan Supply and the Bismarck-Mandan Oliver Supply, Inc. During that time, there was never a service call or assistance that he never provided. His green international pickup hardly ever saw the shop during harvest season. The stores received top honors as an Oliver Corp. dealer.
Adam was a member of the Mandan Moose Club and the Eagles. He had a passion for polka music, playing cards and conversation.
After his father passed away, he began farming and ranching once again. He took great pride in his work and always went the extra way to make sure everything was done well. He would stop to help anyone he saw stranded alongside the road.
Due to health reasons, he sold the majority of his farmland and cattle in 2003. He was always tinkering with his equipment. He also had quite a collection of older tractors that he restored – this was one of his favorite things to do. In his spare time, he would travel between his beloved farms in Milwaukee, Wis., Custer, S.D., and Hemet, Calif.
He is survived by his three daughters, Mary Halverson, Mandan, Laura Schaff, Custer, and Teresa Schaff, Milwaukee; five grandchildren, Aaron, Audrey, Adaer, Allyce and Alden, all of Mandan; two great-grandchildren, Allayna and Colten, Bismarck; his sisters, Barbara, Bertha, Marianne and Leona; and his brothers, Anton, Joseph, Tom, Paul and Martin.
He was preceded in death by his son, Allan; his sister, Katheryn; and his parents, Paul and Magdalena.
