Richard was born on Jan. 16, 1935, in St. Anthony, the son of Adam and Frances (Hoffman) Leingang. He graduated from Mandan High School in 1954. He married Chloe Wead on May 4, 1957, and they made their home and raised their family in Mandan.
Dick began his dedicated career at the Mandan Amoco Oil Refinery on March 7, 1955, as a messenger in the mechanical department. His work in maintenance, carpentry and plant operations led up to his position as oil movement shift supervisor at retirement.
Dick held various officer positions, including Vice President of Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Local 6-10 from 1965-1977, and was a member until 1985. He retired on March 17, 1995, with a record of the longest employment at the refinery, 40 years. He was part owner and operator of Central States Raceway (stock car and snowmobile racing) in Bismarck.
A man dedicated to both family and community service, Dick served for 20 years in the North Dakota National Guard, retiring in April of 1973 and was a member of the Mandan City Commission from 1980-1988.
He was past Governor of the Mandan Moose Lodge and also a member of the Mandan Elks and Eagles Clubs. After his retirement, Dick and Chloe spent much time at their lake cabin at Dinkin Bay near Beulah.
His hobbies included fishing, boating, hunting and gardening. A wonderful, husband, father and grandfather, he loved family get-togethers.
Two years ago, for love of their family, Dick and Chloe took their four children and their spouses on a family cruise vacation. A man who appreciated good friends and good times, his enduring sense of humor and endless wit will be remembered by many.
He will be deeply missed by those who survive him, including his wife, Chloe; three sons and daughters-in-law, Chet and Deb, Todd and Laurie, and Russ and Tammy; one daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Tom Hertz; eight grandchildren, Nicole and Jaymi Leingang, Eric Strom, Brittany and Kylie Leingang, Jaden and Bryn Hertz, and Laura Leingang; his mother, Frances; one brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Pat; and one sister, Dolores Morris. Dick considered himself fortunate in that all of his immediate family members live in the Bismarck-Mandan area.
He was preceded in death by his father, Adam. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
