Henry, affectionately known as Schlubba, was born July 24, 1923, in St. Anthony, the son of George and Elizabeth (Gerhardt) Hoffman. He grew up on the family farm in St. Anthony, where he also attended school. On June 8, 1943, he married Pauline (Berger) Hoffman and they started their journey of 55 years together. They had six children, 10 grandchildren and so many dear friends. Together they kept many families fully-stocked with fresh vegetables from their lush garden and always welcomed everyone into their home.
A hard worker all his life, Henry retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1983. Some of his most fabulous stories came from his memories of working on the wrecker and getting called out in the middle of the night. His hobbies included gardening, tinkering in his yard and shed, helping his kids and grandkids with various projects, metal detecting, fishing, visiting and, of course, dancing. He will be forever remembered for his skills on the dance floor, dancing the polka, waltz and just making everyone smile. Henry’s “hello-dee” and charming grin will live on in the faces of his family and friends who loved him so dearly.
Survivors include his children, Terry and Lucy Hoffman, Pasco, Wash., Susie Freidig (Mike Hallahan), Mandan, Kenny and Judy Hoffman, Bismarck, JoAnn Helbling (Gaylord Fridley), Mandan, and Kathy and Al Wald, Mandan; his grandchildren and their families, Terri Ann Hoffman (Victoria), Perry and Fran Freidig (Anna), John and Kim Freidig (Brooklynn and Bryelle), Martina and Erik Isaacson (Todd, Blake, Kalbe, Ariel and Kire), Traci Hoffman (Sophia), Pam Schafer-Helbling (Brianna), Sonni Menge (Morgan and Austin), Chad Freidig (Noah and Aiden), John Hoffman and Pauline Rader; his sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Bill Schaner, Mandan; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Nancy Hoffman, Pasco, Wash.; his sisters-in-law, Angie Berger and Alma Berger, both of Mandan; his brother-in-law, George Berger, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; his special friends, Geneva Umpleby and her entire family, Leonard Ressler and his newest friends, the wonderful caregivers at Sanford Health on Sunset, where Pa had been a resident for the last couple months. It’s hard not to mention anyone who ever experienced Pa’s strong grip or slug on the shoulder; once you were his friend, you were his lifetime friend.
