Thelma Garber Lorentz, 92, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000 in the Medical Care Center. She was the wife of the late Everett Rae Lorentz.
Born July 9, 1908 in Clover Hill in Rockingham County, she was a daughter of the late John Soloman and Willie Sponaugle Garber. She was a former employee of C & P Telephone Company and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was a member of the Lynchburg Bowling Association and was inducted into the Lynchburg Bowling Hall of Fame. She had volunteered as a pink lady at Virginia Baptist Hospital and was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Lorentz was preceded in death by a brother, John Sherman Garber; two sisters, Ruby Garber Johnston and Norma Garber Bailey; a granddaughter, Brenda Ewers Madden; and a great-granddaughter, Shannon Marie Ewers.
Surviving are her daughter, Betty Lou Vaughan and husband, Conway of Lynchburg; her son, Alfred Clark "Ace' Ewers, Jr. and wife, Ruth of Va. Beach; two brothers, Robert E. Garber and wife, Beverly, David. R. Garber and wife, Jean all of Harrisonburg; and a sister, Willie Jean Coffman and husband, Gordon of Powhatan and 11 grandchildren, Wesley Reid Morton, Steven Wayne Morton, Debra E. Wihnoth, Ruth E. Self, James D. Ewers, Terry E. Lee, David C. Ewers, Laura E. Cowmen, Deborah V. Lovette, Kathryn A. Vaughan and Patricia V. Jennings; 20 great great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Diuguid Wiggington Chapel with the. Rev, Jerry John officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
