Private services were held on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, for Marjorie Nelson Carson, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Fallowfield Township. She passed away Jan. 17, 2015. Mrs. Carson was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Fallowfield Township, at the Nelson Family Farm. Her parents were the late John Firman Nelson and Mayme Bonnell Nelson. Family life was centered around the farm. Marjorie began her education in a one-room schoolhouse called the Certain School in Fallowfield Township. She enjoyed reminiscing about lunch-time sled rides during the winter months, warming mittens on the coal stove in the middle of the classroom, and the mile-long walk to and from the county school. After attending Fallowfield School and Charleroi High School, she graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor of science in education. Marjorie served as an elementary school teacher for 35 years at Fallowfield School and Charleroi High School. Fallowfield School had a wonderful reputation for outstanding education, and she was very proud of being a member of the staff. During that time, she trained 43 student teachers from California University of Pennsylvania. She loved teaching and appreciated the many friendships made during her classroom years. On April 10, 1942, Marjorie married her high school sweetheart, Donald Edward Carson, also of Fallowfield Township. They spent 42 years together prior to Don’s death Sept. 8, 1984. For over 30 years, their favorite pastime was dinner and an evening bridge with the same couples club. They loved the beach and spent each summer of the Boardwalk in Ocean City, N.J. After retirement, they wintered at Indian Shores, Fla., while enjoying the beach, playing bridge and planning numerous activities with large groups of “Snowbirds” from Charleroi. Gathering sand dollars along the shore and watching the shore birds scurry and soar were especially peaceful and enjoyable moments. Marjorie was active in civic affairs. She was a member, and served as president, of the Daughters of American Pioneers and the Athene Club. For 25 years, she served on the Board of Directors, Washington County Federation of Women’s Clubs. Marjorie was a 50-year plus member of the Order of Eastern Stars and had served as Mother Advisor for the Charleroi Rainbow Girls. She was a student of parliamentary law. While living in Florida, she was a member of the Florida Parliamentary Law Association. Sarasota, Fla. became her full-time residence since 1994. Marjorie fondly enjoyed her special friendships there where bridge games became an almost daily event. She was a member of the Charleroi Presbyterian Church where her family belonged for four generations. Marjorie served there as a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years, deacon, session member and elder. Surviving are her daughter, Suzanne of Sarasota, Fla.; and Marjorie’s two nieces, Pat Nelson Morgan and Judy Nelson Sykora. The private burial was in Maple Creek Cemetery, Fallowfield Township, as requested by Marjorie. The SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME was in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at http://www.schrock-hogan.com.
