Stephina Knoll, 91, Bismarck, passed away on April 8, 2010, after a short battle with cancer, peacefully at home in Bismarck, under Hospice care and surrounded by her loving family. A Celebration of Life and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 12, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Revs. John Guthrie and Jim Ermer officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, where a Catholic Daughter’s rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Stephina Lauinger was born Sept. 25, 1918, the daughter of Anton and Clementine (Marshall) Lauinger. She was born, raised and attended school in St. Anthony.
Stephina was married on Sept. 29, 1936, to Phillip Knoll in St. Anthony. Their marriage was blessed with six children: Marv (Gloria), Bismarck, Janice (Bob) Feeney, Bismarck, Sylvia Jean (deceased shortly after birth), Sylvia (Louie) Zachmeier, Mandan, Paul (Susan), Fargo, and Stephanie (Calvin) Volk, Fargo.
Phil and Stephina moved to Mandan in 1940. They owned and operated the Mandan Motel. In 1968, the family moved to Bismarck. Stephina was a much loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an involved spectator of all of her children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities. She loved to crochet, dance, play cards and visit with friends. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Foresters and numerous bridge clubs. She will be dearly missed.
Survivors include five children; 20 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Anton and Martha Knoll, Michael and Helen Knoll, Clementine Lauinger, Theresa Leingang and Irene Knoll; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
Stephina was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Phillip; infant daughter; two brothers, John and Jack; and five sisters, Theresa Berger, Frances Leingang, Margaret Ripplinger, Clara Miller and Regina Leingang.
She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, sense of humor and hospitality.
