Inscription:
Markus "Max" Erhardt, 88, Center, died May 19, 2009, at his home, with his family by his side. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at St. Martin Catholic Church, Center, with the Rev. Roche officiating. Burial will be in St. Martin's Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and continue from 2 to 8 p.m. at the church where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. followed by a parish vigil. There will be no viewing at the church prior to the mass on Saturday.
Markus was born April 25, 1921, in Oliver County, the 14th child of Kasper O. and Anna (Doll) Erhardt. He was raised and educated in Oliver County and enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1941. Max was stationed in the South Pacific Islands during World War II, starting with the two Samoa's, then the Fiji Island and lastly in New Caledonia. Upon his honorable discharge in 1944, he returned to the area and worked at Purity Dairy for a year. Max and Kathryn Ferderer were united in marriage on Oct. 15, 1945, at St. Vincent's Catholic Church at Crown Butte. They then returned to the farm where his Dad had homesteaded and continued farming for 32 years. Max loved the life that farming and caring for the land provided him.
He also worked for BNI Coal and Oliver County road maintenance. For a number of years, Max was also a school bus driver. A member of the Rural Fire District, he was also a life-long member of St. Martin's Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic minister for 20 years. Max was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the St. Anthony Society of New Salem and Center.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed fishing and woodworking. His children all have pieces that he made. He also completed building a grandfather clock.
Max was a humble, kind and gentle soul. He had good, caring neighbors during his farming years. In later years, he especially enjoyed visits and card playing with his friends, Richard and Margaret and Burt and Bernice. Max's blue eyes would light up at the sight of his grandchildren, especially Angela who give him extra special care on her visits.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathryn, Center; his son, Mark, Center; three daughters, Patricia (Duane) Goldade, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Maxine Kaiser and Therese (Greg) Boff, all of Mandan; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Erhardt, New Salem; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Esselmen, Oshkosh, Wis., and O'dea Light, Detroit Lakes, Minn.
Max was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Francis (Frank); his son-in-law, Richard Kaiser; his in-law, Ralph and Margaret Ferderer; five brothers, John Christian, Joseph, Ralph and Connie; seven sisters, Monica Kraft, Clementine Pfleger, Minnie Schwab, Rose Koffler, Bertha Renner and Perpetua and Matilda Erhardt.
Max's family would like to extend their thanks to St. Alexius Hospice for the special care they gave Max during his illness
